Deep snow all the way to the top of this trailless peak, which happens to be one of the "Hundred Highest". Snowshoes are a must - the snow is about 4 ft deep above 2700' elevation. Also, expect falling snow from closed in trees, heavily laden - hooded parkas are recommended.
The route we took was the abandoned DEC South Notch trail that starts from River Rd just E of the Mountain Lake Academy. This trail can be followed for about a mile alongside a brook on the R. We crossed the brook after about 1.25 miles, at a scenic beaver pond, and bushwhacked E through relatively open woods toward the summit. The final upper slopes steepened and became more densely spruced in, with massive amounts of snow on the trees. A few brief views toward the Macintyres. The summit is completely treed and snowed in - no views.
Our hale party of 4 has packed out this route nicely. Anyone wishing for a winter ascent of this fine peak - here's your chance!
