Pleasantly surprised to find the trail hardpacked. Barebooted without even making bootprints. Trail was hard, with a carpet of needles, twigs and cones to provide nice traction. Overhead, the sun was partially visible through the gathering overcast from the coming nor'easter.

At the transition zone, from hardwoods to coniferous, there was lots of very fresh moose sign. I was about to pull my camera bag out of the backpack and mount it to my sternum strap (for quick access) when I saw a huge bull moose. I had a great look at him, but he was also looking at me. His shoulder hump was huge and I could clearly see the antler stumps on his face where he had recently dropped last year's antlers. I tried to slowly get at my camera but he stepped behind some trees before I could get a shot :(

From there to the junction of Bald knob Trail there many moose postholes and even beds. They've been sleeping right in the trail.

Oh, poor raven. Oh well, all animals go to heaven!

Planned on going up on Bald Knod and maybe South Baldface. The Bald Knob Trail was also well packed, but the rest of Slippery Brook Trail and the Mt. Eastman Trail were unbroken. I was being very cautious because I was alone and there was the storm approaching so I stayed below treeline and ventured around east slopes on the way back down.

Happy Trails :)

Thanks for the TR! That's a trail I haven't been on yet, I'll have to check it out. I assume you came up from the east?

Yes, from the Even's Notch side. This is a beautiful alternative to the very steep southern section of Baldface Circle Trail. This will take you over Bald Knob, which has beautiful views of the Baldfaces, and you can make the easy sidetrip over to seldom-visited Mt. Eastman, which has a very serene summit with beautiful views in all directions. Highly recommended.

BTW, I found the front tip to a snowshoe. PM me if it's your's.

Happy Trails :)
