I think it was last year I was asking if anyone had tried a little "snow kayaking". Usually near the end of the ski season some of the places have some goofy sports stuff...ski skimming across water etc.....from time to time I'll see a picture of some one coming down the snow in a kayak.
Ummmm....Looked like fun to me.
Sooo.... This year we made our escape from all snowy rainy stuff down here and headed up to the Gaspe Que.
Sunny Skies !!
The snow looked pretty sketchy on the way up but our friends up there assured us there was 4 or 5 ft of snow in the driveway alone.
We grabbed the snowshoes and headed on up.
Sure enough though the snow was skimpy near the "Mer" (sea) there was plenty as we headed inland.
Last year we left a rec kayak in the "Potatoe Shed"..an underground 'root cellar' so to speak .
Sunny skies warm... temps (50's) perfect corn snow...The idea struck me...this is the time for ....Snow Kayaking !!!
Now the perfect Recipe.
...Take one pair of snowshoes..put on feet...grab one Kayak and one paddle and trudge on up the hill.. (Yes you can leave the PFD behind).
First Lesson...
Do not let go of the Kayak when you stoop over to take off your snowshoes!!
Of course that is exactly what I did...and off down the hill was seen one Yellow kayak being chased by one white whiskerd snow shoed fellow !!
Falling all over himself ...gave a new sense of meaning to the phrase "Stumble Bum"
Lesson #2
Remove the "Raquettes"
jump in the kayak...use the Paddle as a rudder..and the patch of grass at the bottom of the slope will surely stop you before you go into the trees.
Then again perhaps not...!
Didn't know how quickly a kayak can travel over
wet grass.....But I have a much better idea of that now !!
Bit by bit after a few runs a nice Toboggan Run etched itself into the snow.
The routine became put on the shoes... pack down the chute while dragging the yak up the hill... take off the shoes store them in the yak jump in.. and off you go !
Lesson#3
Didn't know that you could "catch some air" on such a small 'bump'.
Though I do now.

Ahh...then there was only one thing left to do.
Share the fun with my beloved.
"Oh Honey... This is so much fun..here give it a try ..you'll love it"

Lesson #4
Didn't know that a much lighter person might catch a little more "air time" on that little 'bump ..or that when landing the kayak might leave my little "toboggan chute" and miraculously head straight for..
Er..well remember that "potatoe shed"....ummmm perhaps I should of covered the entrance back up.
Didn't know it would act like a human propelled kayak "magnet" as she headed straight for it.
"Murphy's Law" unfolds before my very eyes !!

...ummm "Honey you ok down there ??
