The "short" story: Lew Dow, Mike LaRoss, Steve, "Skipper" and I trotted up the Rocky Branch Trail to the height of land, and BW'd to So. Engine Hill (NH3K). As promised, there were outstanding views from the summit... better than I could have imagined.
The "long" story: While "booting" up at Pinkham Notch climbers room, I noticed that I had no boots with which to boot up. Crap. Left them at home drying over the air vent from yesterday's hike. We drove to the trailhead, found Lew already there, and suggested that he and Mike start without us while I hustled back to No. Conway to rent some boots. Lady luck was on my side. IME was open early, full of vendors with gear to "demo" for the day. Free demos... for the day! So within 3 minutes I was out the door with a pair of Scarpa's in hand and back on the road up to the trailhead.
Meanwhile, Lew and Mike dubbed around a little.... and took their time hiking. By the time Steve, Skipper and I were on the trail, we were 35 minutes behind them. Yet we were about to catch up with them about 1/3 of the way into the bushwhack. Excellent. I was able to help break trail and redeem myself. We summited together and all was well.
