Picking up from the Sasquatch report. As he said the 19 mile trail up to the Carter Dome trail packed solid. The Carter Dome trail was in good condition this morning, not as solid as 19 mile but well packed. I would have left the report there but in the parking lot when I returned I met two hikers who told me that coming back from South Carter they met a group of school kids who were spending the night at Zeta pass. According to the two men the group "destroyed" the Carter Dome trail when they went up.
From Zeta pass to South Carter the trail was less well packed but still fairly good. At South Carter the trail ended abruptly. Apparently many hikers turn around at South Carter. I almost bailed myself at this point but decided to give it a try. I found there was a well consolidated trail under the snow. If you could "guess" the way you walked on top of the snow. If you guessed wrong you went in to your knees or worse.
As we were working our way up Middle Carter Sasquatch caught us and broke the trail the rest of the way. The trail down from Middle Carter and on down the North Carter trail and the Imp trail had seen some use but was not well consolidated. It is now broken out through Camp Dodge. It is not well consolidated but it is passable. The Imp trail from the Camp Dodge road to its trail head showed no signs of use.
All stream crossing were covered with snow and ice. There were no blowdowns that I remember up to South Carter. There were a number between South and Middle Carter and a few on the North Carter trail.
