Hello !

Just wondering the conditions on those two roads because I've never been there before…they may be even plowed ?!
Is South Arm Rd open, up to the Clearwater Brook Trail ?
Is the road up to The Landing gated or open, is it drivable up to the Landing at this time of the year (or more ?)

Planning to do Elephant and East Kennebago this week-end. Anyone are welcome to join.

Thanks

South Arm Road is always plowed from Route 120 in Andover up to the lake. That means if you come from the south, you should be all set getting to the Clearwater Brook Trail area. South Arm road is also paved (except maybe for a small patch or two), so mud season will not be a problem.

I have no idea if the log road that heads to the base of Elephant is passable, though. That depends on logging and how quickly the snow has melted. My guess is that is not passable.

If you were looking to travel on South Arm Road coming from the north (i.e. Rangeley Plantation), I would suspect you would run into major problems. It may not be plowed through and it will be MAJOR mud season.

Regards,
Marty

Just for clarification, for unexperienced hikers, the Clearwater Brook Trail was abandoned several years ago and MATC has requested that it not be used. There used to be a posting on their site to that effect but I couldnt find it

The road off South Arm rd to Elephant was -not- plowed when I scouted it on 3/19 It however appeared to be snowmobiled out. I think its highly unlikely that it will be passible by car this weekend unless all the snow has melted... but then there is Mud to contend with!

Which day were you planning Elephant? Elephant was my Sunday "plan b" in case the horns proved too unsavory.

Hmm...weird I have the official NE100 climbing routes document of 1/1/02 where it mentions it as one of the usual routes. Must have been closed since then. Is there a more recent version of those documents I should have ??
