Date of Hike: 4/11/2009
Trail Conditions:
Nineteen-Mile Brook trail: Still some snow (barebootable), though there are many stretches of the trail that have melted out entirely.
Carter Dome trail to Zeta Pass: Solid monorail at the lower elevations, with snow cover increasing as one gains altitude. Both water crossings are extremely easy to navigate.
Carter-Moriah trail to South Carter: Lots of snow, but monorail conditions (postholing possible if one ventures too far away from the center of the trail). A few blowdowns, all easily bypassed.
South Carter to Middle Carter via the Carter-Moriah trail: Similar to the stretch leading to South Carter, though there are a few sections of trail that are tough to follow due to high snowpack/low-hanging branches. Some blowdowns.
Zeta Pass to Height and Carter Dome via the Carter-Moriah trail: A bit difficult to follow. I was perfectly okay in Microspikes, though the steep section leading up to Height is very firm and could be done in crampons. Smooth sailing up to Carter Dome.
Carter Dome trail to Zeta Pass: A slight monorail, but for the most part in good shape.
Special Equipment Required: I used Microspikes from start to finish, although the majority of the people I encountered were able to bareboot all the way up to Zeta Pass. Carried snowshoes, but they did not leave my pack.
Comments: Gorgeous day. Upon seeing the Presis in the clear in my drive up, I was very tempted to change my hiking plans... but was glad that I didn't. Surprisingly, there were very few people out on the ridge, and the ones whom I did encounter happened to be good friends.![Big grin :D :D](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
Still going back and forth on whether or not to write up a TR - stay tuned.
Sincerely,
Miss LRiz
