South Meadows road (Adirondacks)

We were planning to use it as a trailhead but it was marked "temporarly closed" so we ended up starting from the loj.

Is it:
a) always closed in winter
b) not maintained but not closed with some "special circumstance" making it temporarly closed?

Closed?

Is the road closed off or the truck trail to Marcy Dam? The Lake Placid XC skiing site said it is once again snow covered and skiable to Marcy Dam (not plowed but accessible w/ 4WD. When did you go? The snow apparently began Wed AM and as of today they are touting it as OK to ski. Plan on going this Sat. 1/28. Any info appreciated. Thanks.
