19 mile brook trail to Carter Dome trail onto the Carter Moriah Trail

Trail Conditions: At the start of the day, fresh snow. Now packed trails.

Special Equipment: Snowshoes

Comments: A great day for a hike in the trees. We met Dave and Jeb in the parking lot and leap frog with them most of the day. 19 mile brook trail is well packed and a few people ahead of us even bare booted it. Only three people had decided to go up the Carter Dome trail. So heading up the Carter Dome trail we just followed the snow shoe path in front of us. That path lead to the right while the actual trail went to the left as we discovered as we started to bushwhack and realized we were not on the trail anymore. At the Zeta pass junction there was only one set of foot prints that continued onto South Carter. The four of us worked together to break the rest of the trail. We ran into Dave who was the set of snow shoes ahead of us. He lost the trail and had given up. We convinced him to turn around and all five of us headed to Middle Carter. No one had been up from the IMP direction so we decided to return the way we came. Much easier going on packed trails. Back at the Zeta Pass junction there had been heavy traffic on the trail in both directions. Smooth sailing back to the car (this time we didn't take the bushwhack and stayed on the trail as most everyone else had done). Thank you to Dave and Jeb for all your help and THANKS to Dave for breaking trail and joining us for the finish.
