On Sunday, after doing Cliff and Redfield on saturday, Spongebob and I headed to do Noonmark before leaving for our respective homes. For me, its south towards Jersey and for our little crustacean from Maine, it's next to a small barnacle under the Portland Head Lighthouse.
Needlesstosay, this was Noonmark, the mountain, not the diner, although I had visions of being able to order another warm blueberry crumb pie ala mode at the summit. Yum!
Got to St. Huberts and AMR property at a reasonable time for the short hike. Hike turned out to be fairly tough for a 35xx peak. If this was the catskills, I could add it to my 3500' list, but it's not but reminds me of Ashoken, it's not on any "list" but offers views like you wouldn't believe. Much like Ashoken has views of the Burrough's Range, Noonmark has a very good view of the Great Range and Dix is very prominent.
This is a pretty nice hike and probably a bit tougher than it looks on paper. The ridges offer very good rest stops and good views and looking at the crampon marks, it must be fairly challenging in winter, just because the # of rock scrambles there are. It seems like it would be a good introduction to hiking in the ADKS, except for perhaps the lack of mud.
Anyway, took about 1.5 hours to get to the summit after a bunch of stops to drain my shirt. Even though the sun was coming out and the rain from Saturday night was going, it was still very very very humid and warm. I was literally swimming in my sweat at the first ridge. Sponge was pretty much literally, his username too. I don't know if I was wetter on sunday or saturday!
Anyway, got to the summit and rested for a good 45 minutes to an hour, decided it was too nice to go down the other side and make a loop, but simply spend more time at the summit and return the way we came. Ate some gorp at the summit and simple rested, got views and basked in the sun.
A very nice peak and I'm glad we did it on a good day.
