They say timing is everything. It certainly contributed to a wonderful summit experience on St. Regis as we had it almost all to ourselves on this sunny day. We left the full parking lot with two Paul Smith’s vans parked there and followed another couple and their dog all the way up. All those college students were descending as we neared the summit and we passed another large group coming up as we descended so we timed it well! The trail was full of mud holes for most of the trip and turned to ice and glazed snow just before the top. Once again, we used microspikes for our descent only. We spent almost two hours on top. The other couple was only there for about a half hour. We stepped off the trail once to explore several amazing erratics piled on each other. They were as large as two story houses. We also explored the site of the old observer’s cabin. This was fire tower #17.
