date: 5/16/11
trails: starr king trail
conditions: wet and muddy in the usual places down low. remained generally wet with patchy snow/ice above the spring. between the summits there were more significant snow/ice patches, but they were still sporadic and generally minor. climb of waumbek still holding most consistently. one stepover blowdown below starr king and a climb over and duck under along the ridge.
equipment: i carried light traction, but never needed it. some may want it for descent of waumbek, but i can't imagine there will be snow/ice there much longer.
comments: nice day to hike waumbek. no rain during the hike and pretty decent temps. some black flies that were pretty bad in the parking lot, but once moving they weren't a problem. nice wildflowers through out the hardwood section of the hike.
