While going into town shopping I looked south from the Berlin Gorham road towards Shelburne Moriah ridge and was reminded of the unusual lighting conditions this time of year. During the longer days of the summer (and especially in the next couple of weeks), the sun rises well north of east and sets well north of west. I dont tend to notice the morning lighting but in the evening as the sun is setting, the north slopes of the ridge line get illuminated from a unusual angle and if the conditions are right, a lot of geographic features and ravines are lit up with a unusual contrast. The run west on RT 2 from Lancaster with views to towards the Kilkennies and then the approach to the Northern Presidentials is particularly striking especially the north facing ravines along RT 2
I think a lot of folks miss this time of day as if they are up in the area hiking, they are probably out at a restaurant or sitting at their campsite. I highly recommend if its clear out to take a quick drive to see the views as they only last for a few weeks. Just watch for Moose as they tend to be out on the roads during this time of the evening.
