From the WMG description there is a northwest view from the cabin towards Washington. Does anyone know how the views are from the summit are and what direction they are in?

There's a cabin up there with a cut-away view towards the Rockpile; it's nice! There's also a summit loop trail with a few peek-a-boos to the east/northeast. edit: if I remember, they point toward Chandler, Sable and the Baldfaces. The vegetation was pretty thick.

Met my first serendipitous VftTer there, right, Stan? We shared an apple & cheese, but I couldn't stick around for the offered tequila!

Good day-after hike.

I stayed there over this past weekend, but it rained for two days straight, so we had zero views. Very fun (and extremely cheap) place to stay. Will definitely stay again!

It should be noted that the trail goes to a peak which is not the true summit of Black Mountain, but the former site of the Davis Memorial Tower.

I found it to be one of the more underwhelming of the 52 With A View peaks, but it does have a decent view of Carter Notch, as well as some of the peaks in the Baldface area.

Just above the cabin, I recall there being views to the west, but that was before the leaves came out.

The view towards the northeast (Baldface region) is more of what I am interested in. Any photos of that?

I don't have any photos online of that view, but looking at unprocessed photos, it looks like you'd only see the short section of ridge between South and North Baldface this time of year, due to leaves.

There is a Presidential view from Black, by the way, I believe from Boott Spur to Nelson Crag.

The views are standup views if I recall - in other words, if you sit down, you don't see anything - no view ledge, etc.

Net net, I think the view from the ski area peak is better.

I don't remember that :D Actually, I don't remember a view because it was socked in but do recall going to the summit and getting glimpses of a forested valley and peak to the north framed by a rainbow.

It is a good "on the way home" hike. It was such a hike that also took us to Doublehead where there is a view towards Washington from the cabin itself. A short distance beyond the cabin, and outhouse, there is a view of Mountain Pond and points east. Doublehead offers a nice loop over north and south peaks. The latter has pleasant countryside views in the Jackson area.

By the way, these cabins are a terrific value in my mind. $20/night and they sleep 8. We've got a "Hooligan Hike" reserved at Doublehead in October and I booked it a couple extra nights to allow for a, shall we say, logistical trip.
