Has anyone here used an insulated supergaiter for their winter endeavors? I use La Sportiva Makalus and on a few occasions my feet have started to get alittle cold (in extreme cold) even when I am wearing liner socks, VBL’s and Exp wool socks. Wearing any more layers in my boots makes them tight and cuts off circulation. So do they do the trick? One thing that I did do which helped was to put an aftermarket insole in the boot, which defiantly bumped up the insulation. Any thoughts?

I use supergaiters with my winter leather double boots (30 yr old Galibier Makalus).

I have very little trouble with cold feet.

They will probably keep your feet somewhat warmer. (Not familiar with the La Sportiva Makalus.)

what kind do you use DougPaul?
Carman Super Gator

Nylon duck upper, nylon nordura + thin layer of felt around the boot, nylon tape rand, stainless steel cable in the rand, arch cord.

I got them ~30yrs ago. Wouldn't be surprised if this brand and model are no longer available.

Just tried a google search--someone is actually selling a pair on ebay!

I've hiked with a combination of the LaSport Mak and the OR X-gaitor, while winter hiking in the Adirondacks. With the Closed Cell Foam this combination is actually quite warm. The nice thing about the Xgaitor is that you can wire the front down to your boot. I've never had a problem with a pop-up. The only other problem with the new Maks is the full length Steel Shank which conducts cold from the bottom of the boot. But a cold weather insole should take care of that. Currently I'm using the Columbia Ice Dragon. Pretty warm but much lighter than the Maks.
