Following a weekend in Canada (just over the line from Detroit), I came back Sunday night and decided to knock this off one off the list. I went up to Waterville Valley strictly thinking "just get this one over with". I headed up the trail starting by the lodge. The foliage was in full effect and I was displayed with a beautiful red/yellow/orange trail of the first fallen leaves. The trail was wet following the flooding over the weekend, and the streams were flowing hard. Skies were overcast and the top of the mountain looked to be locked in a cloud. Following a packet of Goo, I sped up the trail at a decent pace. I stopped briefly at "the view" by the intersection with the Ski trail and was pleasently surprised by what I could see.
I kept heading up and got to the peak in a little over an hour. The view was nice. There were some low clouds in the valley, and the Osceola peaks were clearly visible standing above the clouds. The only way I can explain the view was "very New England". The various colors below the clouds accented the mystique of the almost eerie, but beautiful view. Whereas I was just trying to "get this hike over with", I found it to be very enjoyable and surprisingly rewarding at the top.
Following a twenty minute stay at the top and a nice conversation with a couple who were also peakbagging, I left the peak and headed toward the ski trails. I went down the north ski trail and did my first "jog a ski trail" down the mountain. OUCH! What a great workout... that was until the wet weather we had encountered lead me into ankle-high water. I sloshed my way down the last third to half of the mountain back to my car.
