With life throwing all those inevitable multiple curve balls of stress, aggravation, and dissapointment at me in very rapid succession the last 2 weeks, , including waking up at 3:00 AM this morning from nightmares of people in speedboats chasing me on the beach (HUH), I decided that I was really in serious need of a 4K hike, really, really bad!
So after taking care of personal business, I headed north to the Whites after 1:00 PM. That's a pretty late start for this time of year and caused some consternation at home, but I packed and headed north anyway. I was determined to hike a 4K, and with lots of ideas and not a heck of allot of daylight, on the way up settled on Tecumseh in Waterville Valley. It was a brilliant, clear day!
I had last been up Tecumseh in July 2003, so it had been awhile. I suspected I'd be the only one there at 3:00 PM on a Thursday, in late September and could have time to myself on the way up and down. I'd go the standard route, hit the peak and catch the sunset from the Ski trail side and walk the ski trail down. To celebrate the sunset I had a nice beverage along. So I had a plan.
I parked and started loading up when I noticed a blue BMW with Virginia plates driving around, he saw me, drove back towards me and asked if I knew where the trailhead was! "Yep, over there..." and pointed at it, we talked briefly and he said he'd just finished the Tripyramids at 2:00 and was now going to try to bag Tecumseh on the same day. I was still gearing up and he took off up the trail. I was in no hurry.
The trip up the Tecumseh trail was pleasant and the air was very cool, at 50 degrees. When I reached the summit I was still solo, and wondered what had happened to the hiker from VA. I spent 10 minutes on the summit enjoying the spectacular view and scenery, including taking a call from my hiking buddy. It was incredibly clear, what a day to hike, and was very uplifting! So after awhile I started down the trail.
I met the hiker from Virginia, and went the short distance back up to take his picture (he forgot his camera and had lost his map) and he took mine! The rest of the trip down was great. He was originally from Arlington, MA and moved for job purposes. He was also very familiar with Boston and had worked down the street from where I work. Small World! So he came back every year or 2 to continue his 4K quest. After Tecumseh he had 8 left.
The view on the way down ski trail was superb, one of the clearest days I had in a very long time. All in all, it turned into a really great day, and we celebrated off the Sosman trail with my Bud Light and when we got back to the cars...we relaxed and each had a Sam Adams from his cooler! We exchanged e-mail addresses so I could send him pic for his album. I headed south to home and he headed North to his campsite on the KANC. Another really great day in the whites.
Pics are attached!
