Trail conditions: well packed out with an inch of fresh snow towards the bottom..section on the "ramp" from the Viewpoint..(somedays) to Sosman trail booted out with solid footing..some windblown spots along the ridge from Sosman to the Loop..Western end of the loop had one 25 yard swath of loose snow where a drift had formed though once past that the trail was firm again
Equipment: Winter conditions today..trail well booted out and a bit narrow for snowshoes... we opted for microspikes from the ramp up and back to the car which proved an excellent choice..no postholing..around 8- 10 inches snow at 2000 feet rising to 16-20 above 3800 feet..a couple of drifts along the top.. snow bridges starting to form on the upper 2 crossings
Brief report: Nice day in the Whites.. We opted for a short, close to home hike as afternoon forecasts seemed ominous..light snow as we headed up 93 gained intensity as we headed to the ski area parking lot...footing excellent all day as the snow got pretty heavy in spurts then petered out at times..as we rose into the clouds it became evident that views would be limited.. They had the snowguns blasting on the bottom half of the mountain but it got quieter as we climbed..Claude and Sandy's first year looking forward to winter hiking..a great gear check today as temps were cold...zero at the start rising to 14 with brisk wind on the summit...Made it back to the Meredith area before any forcast freezing rain developed....
