I was hiking South Moat yesterday and still feeling very frustrated over the removal of the Pemi suspension bridge. At the same time I was appreciating the relatively new section of the Moat Mountain Trail. Nice parking lot, too. The opposing feelings made me wonder what else has the forest service done recently that I should be appreciating. Can we have a thread on appreciation? I need it to help me with my negative feelings.

Coming from CT, I'm not even sure of everything they do. I can tell you this though: I've always been impressed with all the trailhead parking that is available. I'd guess the most popular trailhead in CT is the one for Bear Mtn and Sages Ravine on the AT. This is an unpaved lot that can MAYBE hold 15 cars, if everyone parks well, with one dirty outhouse. Nothing like the lots and facilities there.

I need to spend some time on the WMNF website. I'm sure there are plenty of things; facilities, education, etc. that they do well on a limited budget.

After a couple months of hiking in VA, and playing on other trails outside NH, I have learned that the trail maintenance in the whites is superior to anything I have experienced since then, especially on 4000 footers. They really are like highways. My first significant hike down here on a Potomac AMC maintained trail I got lost and walked 2 miles out of my way.

The bad: they try to enforce illegal fees.

The good: they look after a number of outstanding Wildernesses, including the Pemi, within a couple of hours from one of the country's major metropolitan areas.

Some people knock the heated Lincoln Woods bathroom, but coming out there in the dark after a long, cold, winter hike, I'm very grateful for it.

The best thing that they're doing is probably not much at all. The worst of it, right now, seems that they're wasting resources and irritating part of the public by removing a semi-useless bridge in the Pemi (which basically only serves to enable an 11-mile ski route). They replaced the bridge on the Great Gulf Trail which actually is a main artery and quite useful.
