Zippy and I left around 7:00 this morning to do The Horn via the Unknown Pond Trail. I was unaware of the NEHH about twelve years ago when I did Cabot via this route. Hence, I missed The Horn at that time.

There was one other car along the road on this Wednesday morning, and I ran into Georg near Unknown Pond. It was very nice to meet him and we chatted a bit, as he was coming down from Cabot and then heading on to Waumbec. He mentioned that he was originally from Switzerland, so I knew he did not need any alp from me..

The views from the top of The Horn were excellent though it was rather cool and windy on top. We dropped down a few feet from the top to a rocky ledge and had lunch. There were fine views from The Carters to Mansfield, the wind was much less and the rocks were comfortably warm from the sun.:)

Most of the trail was dry except for the half mile closest to the trailhead which was very muddy, mucky and sloppy. Which meant a very dirty dog got into the car.

I loved the Horn when I did it last year, definitely worth the .3 mile spur trail anyway, I don't think you can see any interstate from it and it was just a perfect ending to the day.. I guess it is on the NHHH? Whadya know, I guess I've done at least one now.. :)

Horn/Lists, etc.

First I want to say that I think The Horn may be my favorite view summit in the White Mountains. The view of the Mahoosucs, the Moriahs and Carters and the Presidentials are truly outstanding.

That said, whether you are doing the Northeast 100 Highest or the New Hampshire 100 Highest, you now need to turn around and go back to get "The Bulge", it's on both lists. Sorry, no expansive views unless you do it in winter.

Well, the Swiss have the Matterhorn, but us guys here in the Whites, we have THE Horn!;)

And John, although I've never met you, I'd be willing to bet that if the guy you met who was originally from Switzerland did in fact need some "alp", he could bank on you to provide it to him.:)
