Yesterday was a splendid day to go take a hike and not to go to work! Well, what day isn't? The night before I had seen Garry G make a post about hiking the Kinsmans, so I decided that on my drive over to Maine on Friday, I would try to join up with him and hike a few peaks that I had not done as of yet. So I had a few beers, packed all my holiday stuff and gifts, put together my hiking bag and then went to sleep.
I woke up early Friday morning, around 5:30 or so, and headed out to NH. I arrived at the trailhead off of rte 16 a little after 8 in the morning and after 3 or 4 minutes I saw Garry pull up in his vehicle, great timing. After about 10 minutes or so of me slowly getting ready, we headed up the trail. The climb up was pretty uneventful, bare ground for the first 1/3 of the hike and then we gradually hit the snowline, but we barebooted it to the top, since there really wasn't much in the way of ice. The top of the mountains had about 3-5 inches of snow, I would guess. It was just right for boots, no need for snowshoes.
We arrived at the top of N Kinsman around noon and took in the wonderful views of Lafayette and Lincoln. It really was a perfect weather day. The temp was near 30 and we had sporadic sunshine, but no wind to speak of. I took a few minutes at the top to snap some pics and then I booked it over to S Kinsman, as Garry told me today was the shortest day of the year, and I wanted to make it back out of the woods before sunset. I arrived at S Kinsman maybe 20 minutes or so later, and took in the views. They were nice, but not too different from the other peak. I saw many ski areas out in Vermont, but it was hard to decipher which peak was which. I then headed back over to N Kinsman and stopped and ate my deli sandwhich from the gas station. It wasn't too bad as far as gas station deli sandwhiches go, but not quite up to par with Subway sandwhiches. (By the way, i do not collect any royalties from Subway for that plug, but if you guys want to start sending me free sandwhiches, that would be cool.)
I then put on my stabilicers and started down the mountain. I met up with Garry about a mile down the mountain and we had a nice gentle walk out of the valley. All in all a very nice day, and I can not wait to get back out again. I am a little sore today since this was the first hike in about 3 months, but I am very happy that I got out on a wonderful day. It was also nice hiking with Garry, and hopefully I will be able to catch up with him again sometime when I am out hiking in NH again.
