Funny, I don't remember being handed a glass when I came out of the water after going through the ice on a couple of occasions:

(This sort of thing is done annually under the auspices of the Norwegian military. Even National Guard units from Minnesota have been there for it – which in their case is a long way to travel to find an ice covered lake.)
