Mrs.KD and I arrived at the Three Ponds trailhead about 11AM on Sat 2/25 for a leisurely trip in to the shelter. After a quick check of the trail, keeping a previous hiking disaster in mind,we decided that snowshoes were the way to go. A light powdery snow started to fall, putting us in the mood for the trip, and by the time we reached the shelter 2 hours later,it was a fine snow falling heavily.
We rigged a couple of tarps on the shelter to cut the wind, set up our gear, and headed out on the trail along the pond. We went back to a place we had camped a few years back, and after checking it out ,decidedd that we should return to that spot on a future trip. Now,shelters are nice but there's nothing nicer than setting up in the snow in a pine grove.
We returned to the shelter by way of the pond, and the openess of the pond and the heavy snowfall made the trip seem like an expedition. I had thoughts of the Shackleton expedition, plodding endlessly in the white expanse, with no horizon. How did they keep their sanity?
On returning to the shelter,we made some hot soup and sat quietly, enjoying the snow and the silence.
Sunday morning arrived windy and clear. The wind and the -5o temps made packing up a fast an easy choice.
The trip out was enjoyable, breaking trail thru the fluffy powder, with bright sun and blue sky. It appeared that about 8" of powder fell during the night.
All together,a cold but nice weekend out.
