Winter conditions today. A dusting of snow at the trail head to about 3" on the peaks and ridges. Just enough snow to hide the ice underneath. Traction recommended, especially on the steeps. One could hear the ice crunching under the points of my spikes. Avalon to the Jct. had some ice with easy water crossings. AZ to Tom could be bare booted ascending. Spur trail to Tom had some hidden ice. Willey Range trail was in pretty good shape with just two step over blow downs and enough snow to cover the ice. Avalon from Field back to AZ junction was really icy. Spikes worked great but crampons wouldn't have been an overkill. Not a bad day. Some sun with chilly temps and not too much wind. I had the trails to myself today.
