Last Weekend's fantastic weather (for April, anyway) demanded a scenic hike -- and I wanted to do some more snow-filled above treeline hiking while the snow lasted. So... we did a loop hike of Franconia Ridge, heading up the Falling Waters trail and down via the Greenleaf Hut.
It was quite warm even by mid-morning, and most people weren't wearing snowshoes, which meant that a lot of the trail was posthole-ridden. We switched to snowshoes partway up and on the way down to smooth out the trail a little and to avoid sinking in to our thighs unexpectedly every now and then.
The ridgewalk itself was fantastic, with perfect visibility in all directions. Between Lincoln and Lafayette, the snow fields were pretty extensive and nicely firm -- I enjoyed boot stepping on clean snowfields for much of the way.
We encountered a couple of lively guys, Dave and Roger (and their dog, Clint) on the way up and on the summit of Haystack. On the summit of Haystack, Dave had taken to running and leaping off of a crag near the summit and down into a field of soft snow. I got some good midair shots of him, which you can see in the trip report's images.
