I didn't hike much in August and so decided to stretch the legs with a Jewell --Ammo loop.
We got off to a fairly early start and didn't run into too many people on the Jewell albeit more than I've ever seen on the trail before. We really started to run into folks when we hit Gulfside.
The summit was very crowded and the wind very strong. I was told that it was blowing in the 40s with gusts up to 50 mph. We found both solitude and shelter from the wind on the steps of the Yankee building right next to the sign that says: 'This building is not the weather observatory and never has been.' It was very relaxing sitting there soaking up the sun.
Heading down to Lakes of the Clouds we ran into mobs of people. They came in waves. The crowds didn't stop until we reached the trailhead. I was also amazed when I got back to the car. All of the parking lots were full.
The trails themselves were clear of blowdowns from start to finish, although the Jewell could use some brushing right at the tree line for a short distance. There was almost no mud on the trails.
It was a beautiful day for a hike. It was probably the first time I summited Washington with totally dry clothes. The wind above the tree line totally dried them out.
Lauky had a great time. He worked the crowd as usual. He's quite a con artist.
