Date of Hike:9/2/09
Via Pogy Notch Trail to Center Ridge trail to new Traveler trail to North Traveler trail counter clockwise per BSP suggestion.
Trail Conditions: Dry, a couple of stretches of loose rock descending North Traveler. Trail markings are kind of sparse and faded along new sections of trail above treeline.
Special Equipment Required: Sunscreen and sun glasses, plenty of water. There was no water source from the Howe Brook Crossing on the Pogy notch trail to the return point at the camp ground. The spring on North Traveler was not evident.
Comments: The new loop is very spectacular with lots of views from extensive above treeline stretches. The blazing on the new section was faded in many locations and finding the actual trail route was a challenge in many places as there is no real well defined trail bed. Not an issue to experienced hikers, but less skilled folks may have some issues finding the points where the trail enters the woods. The new trail sections through the woods are very well laid out with lots of attention to keeping a steady grade. The descent down off North Traveler does have a 1/2 mile stretch of very loose talus footing, that is unwelcome at the end of long day, but the rest of the hike is first class. It took me 9 hours and the park recomends 10 to 12 hours.
