Have you folks seen this:

http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=118:1:16556327545119248949::NO:::

If you select the state and change the "feature class" to 'summit'

You can search for mtns and it returns data on the peak data, such as for Couchsachraga in the ADKs:

http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=118:3:16556327545119248949::NO::P3_FID:947539

It spits out the lat/long (note the datum used) and any matches so if you search for say "panther" it'll return all the peaks named "Panther" in say NY or variants of the term. aka 'slide' will return Big Slide in the ADKs as well as Slide Mountain in Ulster Cty (catskills).

A fun little thing to play around with.

Interesting! I wonder how accurate it is ??

As accurate as the data on the USGS maps? I imagine they have data for what's on the USGS quads and they're as accurate as the age of the USGS data made to make it.

Maptech TN has a feature to search for various USGS placemarkers so you can find how many Slide Mtns exist on a CD set/region.

Not quite, there are a number of "keypunch errors". My worst experience was trying to find county highpoints of LA with this method, in over 90% of the counties the result was bogus because nearly any mispunch beats a true hp of 15' :)

In the Whites, look up Bartlett Haystack
