Never been to Vermont and would like to start. Where ia a good area to go if I wanted to do a couple of large hikes (2-3000 feet) a couple of smaller Hikes(1000 feet) and have access to kyack some lakes and rivers.

Waitsfield's not bad. You're near Mansfield and Camels Hump; there's lots of lodging (ski town); and there are one or two outfitters with river info.

A closer drive for you is SW VT. There are lakes and rivers, some great towns and plenty of peaks up to 3,000' gains. Nothing above tree line but some viewtop peaks. Let me know if you'd like more beta.

Little River campground near Waterbury is nice.. there is a newly reopened reservoir to kayak in from the campground. It is like 15 minutes from Camel's Hump and a short drive to Mansfield...

Ben & Jerrys is also there too. Yum!

The Green mountains pretty much fit the bill all the way up and down the state.

Get the "Green Mountain Club Day Hiker's Guide to Vermont"

or "GMC's Long Trail Guide" for tons of information.

Gifford Woods State Park in the Killington area is an awesome campground...4ks include Killington and Pico, Mendon is a NEHH peak with a relatively easy bushwack. Shrewsbury Peak and Blue Ridge Mntn are beautiful sub 4ks. Deer Leap is an easy hike from the campground that gets you great views. Kayaking on Chittendon Reservoir a short drive away or the smaller Kent Pond across Rt 100 from Gifford Woods. All within about 5-10 miles drive from the state park. (actually, you can hike Killington and Pico from there). Some of the best of VT can be seen by auto touring the area, as well.

Rt 4 East out of Whitehall NY and you are there in just about an hour's time.

Stowe/Waterbury area...

~ as mentioned above, Little River State Park is a very nice campground
~ Waterbury has an awesome microbrewery/restaurant called the Alchemist
~ Stowe has an awesome microbrewery called the Shed
~ two nearby rivers for canoeing/kayaking, the Winooski and the Lamoille
~ Stowe Pinnacle is an awesome 3-mile hike.
~ Mt. Mansfield is an awesome longer hike
~ Camel's Hump is my favorite summit in Vermont
~ tons of waterfalls/swimming holes in the area, including very fun cliff-jumping
~ Ben & Jerry's!
~ apple cider mill
~ tons of good food in Stowe

Roadtripper is such an all 'round VFTT'r. Covers just about everything! :D

In the Waitsfield area, you can also drive up to Lincoln Gap and catch the Long Trail -- you hit a couple 4K peaks with not much effort because you start at a fairly high altitude from the road. Abraham, Lincoln (sub-4k) and Ellen make a nice in and out tour with a shelter walk-by about 1.8m in.
