Has anyone been out and about on any 4000' peaks in VT in the recent past?

I am going to attempt to get a couple in this weekend and would like to know what to bring, like snowshoes or crampons or dayhikers or a swimsuit??

Just curious.

Thanks!

:)

I believe the trails are still "closed" until the end of the weekend, at the very least they open on saturday, might want to check the GMC website to be sure

they have been discouraging hiking due to mud season, so the trails haven't seen much traffic (and if they had, probably not too much admittance)

Given its just getting to the end of mud season, its probably still on the muddy side. Might as well bring waterproof boots, full gators, maybe crampons just in case for up top

But make sure you check the trail openess status. Remember the people who set these guidelines know more about mountain geology than we do, and they set these rules for a good reason.

The Mount Mansfield snow stake is reporting 11" of snow currently.

Not sure what routes you are considering, but based on previous years's attempts, I would guess the worst conditions for snow/mud would be on the ridge between Mounts Ellen and Abe (esp. just north of Abe in that col), and beneath the Chin on Mansfield. The trails on Camels Hump and Killington always seem to dry off comparatively soon.

Great info, thanks!

I had postponed this trip a few times due to the closure, and to respect the people who take such great care and effort to maintain the trail system. I understood that they would be opening for the weekend, so that is why I decided to give it a try.

I guess I should have worded the question differently, and asked 'nearby' the closed trails, since I did know they were closed...

I read that on a great day you can see Canada from The Chin, I will have to pack along my binoculars!

Thanks all.

It's only 50ish miles; you won't have a problem. On a *great* day you can see Whiteface in the Adirondacks from Moosilauke, 100ish miles.
:D

That said, the views of Champlain and the Adirondacks from Mansfield are spectacular.
