This is a sorta like a trip repor, I guess. Our Gang recently drove the 11-hour RT up to the Lake Placid area (4th w/e in a row) for a few days hiking and the Annual 46er Induction Dinner. VFTT was very well represented at the dinner and I’ll just briefly hit upon our hikes.

Moose/McKenzie (Saturday) -
These imposing peaks dominate the western backdrop for the village of Lake Placid as they rise steeply from the western shore of the lake itself. At 3850-3900 feet, these two peaks, while bigger than a few of the esteemed 46, and are virtually ignored by the masses.

A couple words………………. Totally awesome. What a mistake to pass these two up. Quiet, phenomenal views, great trail…… just a gem of a hike. I’ll post pictures soon enough, that’ll do more justice than my pathetic words. 7.5 hours – 11 miles (~2900’)

TR (Sunday AM) –
A non-descript little mountain next to Indian Falls. The only thing exciting about this one, was that I let my son navigate 100% of the .7 mile (RT) bushwhack portion, from where we left the trail to the summit and back again. A few times there was the whisper of a path back in there, but I refused to let him use them, for this one. Well, I’m here and writing this, so he passed. Even negotiated the cliffs very skillfully. 4.5 hours (9 miles, 2200’)

He is learning the craft.

46er Induction Dinner –
What a night, I must have met/saw 50 people or more, many I recognize or meet through VFTT. Here’s a partial list of those I met or already knew. Peak_Bgr, Bushwhacker, HIATIS, masshysteria, ALG, rhihn, AlpineSummit, Tom Rankin, Rob, Pat, Crazymama, NYBrad, Christine, Skyclimber and a few others. Forgive me if I didn’t mention others directly, but I wasn’t recording the names on paper (it would have helped). In fact, one of my huge regrets was that I did not get a chance to visit and talk long enough with any of you. Seems I’ve come to know many from here and then when I finally met you, it was all at once and I didn’t get to ask you all anything I wanted to. Pretty tough, but we had fun.

We went though the ceremony, which was nice, and then it came time to get our certificates. With 209 of us, they kinda herded us through like cattle, but something did CATCH MY EYE. I believe this also might also be a first, though I don’t even know if they even record this sorta thing. That’s right, a first in the 70 year history of the most esteemed peakbagging club in the NE (IMO ;)). I saw someone receive their “official” 46er certificate in a “VFTT” T-shirt. So who was this person. A senior member with 100s of posts? A “old timer” from the old lexicon days? Or perhaps someone with a very high “user reputation” :D.

Not a chance, some goofball that only joined in April 2005 and only has 5 posts to his credit…… His name is Everest NBD (?????? Anyone know this clown).

If that’s not enough, there was another VFTT clad inductee as well. A cute little thing that hasn’t stopped smiling since they announced that she was last years “youngest” 46er at age 11. Seems these two received “these” gifts from Peak_bgr & HIATIS just before the ceremony and felt the need to where them to the festivities.

Anyhow, I rounded them up took and took a few pitctures. Thanks to everyone and we had a great time. I only hope that next time, we can chat a little longer.

Had we only known that all of those "celebrities" were there! Next time we will bring a notebook!

Congratulations, Ashley!
Dick and Joanne!!

My son (Tom) and I had a great time at the dinner. Sat with Dick and Joanne for dinner. We had great time talking about, what else? The 46. We got to meet a few people, but couldn't hang around too long. Tom did the math, 8 hrs. driving to attend a 4 hr. dinner! Yes sir, it was worth it!

For most of the ride home, Tom slept. However, before leaving the parking lot of the HI, he informed me that he wanted to finish his 46 before he graduates from high school. "Well Bud, that's 10 peaks a year for the next 4 years?" was my first thought. " We can do that, can't we?" was his reply. I guess I've got a pretty full dance card for the next few years. I am so looking forward to that. I've got one very psyched young man on my hands!

Hey Ash, Tom told me that you were announced as the youngest recipient this year. Congrats from both of us. Mr. NBD, your Dad told me you were inducted into the OA. Congrats on that and the 46r award. By the way, did anyone notice that this young man knows how to pick out some pretty sharp headgear? Go Sox!

Tim,

I'm sorry that I couldn't be there yesterday, but had plans for a hike today, and SWWBO had me hopping around the house Sat and Sun.

Moose and McKenzie are 2 of my favorites, glad you had a great day.

Re TR mountain. There is actually a pretty good herd path that starts near the wooden steps on the Marcy trail. It goes into the woods and then parallels the trail for quite a ways before turning up the hill. It was good that you had son navigate, though. Good practice.
See you soon.

Alan

Other VFTTers at the 46er Dinner

Tim, you also met me (eddie) #5246, my son Eric a 24er and my brother Bill (Willie) #5193. It was a pleasure to meet your entire family and share some stories. Congrats and good luck on the ADK 100 with your son.

Dang, I missed a lot of these people! Next year we'll have to do a VFTT meet and greet at the 46R dinner!

Mavs, congrats to you and your family! I thought the dinner went pretty well, and the ceremony was *MUCH* faster than the FTFC ceremony, thank *GOD*!!!

Congrats to all the other VFTT'rs who received their certificates. I think the post-dinner party at the Lake Placid Bub and Brewery was lightly attended, but we did manage to down several pints of 46-er Pale Ale!!

It was a great evening.

Tim... you forgot to mention Hillman1! Jane was very happy to finally meet Doug and your family. Congrats to you all! Did you know that Ashley talks a lot? We love you all - sorry that we didn't get to meet everyone else.

Since we were herded out into the hallway alphabetically, and my last name is VanHise, I missed many of the awards, including the Dubois family. I'm glad that we had a chance to talk a little afterward.

Inge's talk about the Grace & Carson renaming efforts was well done, and the lady (name?) who is a nursing home administrator who spoke about meeting Grace in her nursing home had some very heart warming things to add. It was a very special evening.

Congratulations to all the new 46-Rs!!!

One more thing... HarryK wasn't there, so we all had to actually BUY our beer!

1. I approve of the name change for Grace. Not sure about Carson. I hope the 46Rs aren't going to say "change both or forget about it!" on this name change proposal. Hmmm, I almost want to create a poll...

2. Ditto!

3. LOL! There was plenty of 46R Pale Ale, even at the dinner!!! LPPB has become quite popular up there.

I liked some of the little things they did at this dinner:

- Large buttons for new 46r's with your name on it

- 46R ale on sale at the bar (oh, right, I already mentioned that!)

- Correspondents had bright yellow shirts on, and officers were identified.

I also met my 7th grade Science teacher, Dan Lewicki, a 46R, at the dinner, after 30 years. Wow, that brought back memories!

Gee, We only hike together and were standing next to each oher for about 40 minutes

We only talked to Eddie, his brother and son for about 30 minutes

and............. Inge (Ice-n-snow), who spoke to the whole group at the meeting, I failed to mention that to.

Forgive me if I forgot to mention anyone in particular, its' not deliberate. Forgive me, I'm a simpleton, and I met so many people that by the end of the night, my mind was fried. No disrespect inteded.

ALG, I got a great picture of you getting your cert, you want me to e-mail it?.

Moose is on my NY 100 Highest List. Is McKenzie quite close by? Either way, it sounds like it's worth the trip!

Tim,
I tried to PM you with this message, but your box is FULL.

Jane is so happy to have met you and your family. She thinks you're all nice (I tried to straighten her out on that...).

Yes, PLEASE e-mail me the photo. When I get my FILM developed, I'll get a copy of your family photo to you. Maybe some day I'll have a digital camera...

I think that we'll be at the VFTT Summer outing at Spence's, so I'll see you there! -Bob

Tom,

I'm not sure it's an all or none deal, the 46ers have a history of compromise when it comes to peak-naming I beleive.

I can appreciate that Russell Carson is pretty obscure at this point, but have you ever had a chance to thumb through "Peaks and People"? It is an amazing piece of history that really spells out the true spirit of each mountain. Reading it myself, I was able to learn an amazing amount of history about the peaks.

The Marshall boys even had to go "back in" and reclimb a few based on Mr. Carson's advice.

History and time often have a way blurring just how important events or people really are to present day life, and I think this is the case here. Many who have been touched by Grace are still here with us today and can tell us of her spirit and impact first hand, as happened at the meeting. But, because so few are still with us that have been "personally" touched by Russell Carson, it does not mean that he is not very much still a part of the history and folklore of the Adirondack High peaks. That's just my opinion.

Yup, Russell is very deserving of this peak. Besides, to be blunt, I wonder if John A. Dix, who is certainly a noble fellow, a former governor of NYS and civil war Major General.................... but does he really derserve 3 peaks with his name on them? I think not. Oh yeah, would it be ironic that I learned that last bit from Mr. Carson's book

Great idea!

Yeah, we missed a lot of people, too. (Shoulda worn my VFTT t-shirt!!) It was real nice finally getting to meet Tim and family and Bruce (AlpineSummit) and his wife. My apologies for not saying hi to everyone else ..... Carla and I were looking at everyone trying to recognize faces, but were mostly unsuccessful. We only stayed for about 1/2 hour and after a quick beer, we headed out.

Rob

Yeah we missed a lot of folks too that would have been great to meet (not enough avatars...me included). We had to bug out right after the mtg...we had to pack up at our camp site at South Meadows and then drive back home (4 1/2 hours) so it was a long day/night....by the way camping at South Meadows was really nice.........

Pat Connors

My brother Steven and I were there too

We didn't know what to expect, blazer or t-shirt? The latter was fine. And meeting my correspondent, Gary Koch, who was also in a t-shirt ( yellow as all correspondents ) brought a personal aspect for us who didn't recognize any others. But, as reading this thread reveals, so many were there. How wonderful being a member of such an esteemed collection of people. And to be a 46r...40 years after Algonquin! I may be an older inductee but next week I do Whiteface on foot and bike on the hillclimbs. Catch me if you can.

The meeting, as this site also demonstrates how much value there is in common shared experience.

610 miles of driving for me round trip that day. Now that is empowerment.

Life is good.
