I think everyone elected me to do the trip report. So here goes.

8:45 Saturday morning I show up for an embarrasing introduction, and a few minutes later we are all happily trotting down the White Dot, destined for Monadnock's summit. It is a cool clear day, and soon everyone is warming up and stripping down to base layers.

We reach the cascade trail (or was it the link) and head off in that direction. A babbling brook flows to our left as we ascend the effortless trail leading towards the summit. Soon, a few views open up and we all pause to take in the sites.

Pretty soon a scramble makes itself apparent, and Hamp and I cannot resist the urge to bushwhack for a bit, so we separate from the rest of the group. The scramble is delectable, and offers views along the way, in addition to some good avi-shots. We attain the ridgeline after some hand-over hand, and are soon reunited with the group.

Everyone is now bundled in their wind protection layer, and we all plod our way to the summit. The terrain is rocky with patcy ice, and I decide it would be fun to go for a ride, purposefully sliding down the ice, in opposition to our progress. Everyone laughs, and my butt is wet, but hey, I'm the elected clown for the day anyway.

Hamp an I enjoy some more slip sliding on the way up the summit, and grab a few nice shots. Everyone else is being very carefull. (as they should) We reach the summit without much difficulty, to find it swarmed with humans, as usual. We all hunker down and share a thermolite pad and some warm hot cocoa from my thermos.

After our long and pleasant break, we all continue down the white dot trail eventually picking up the Ampitheatre trail. I make note of a couple of places where I may have lost the trail last spring. Abster regales us with stories of Colorado. The ampitheatre trail is pleasant, and before long Hamp is sprinting up Bald peak; we finally get our heartrate up for the day. I sit and break for more cocoa, and we all decide it is best to descend. We follow a series of "S"s down the mountain reaching another trail of "C"s. It is at this point my knee is screaming, no doubt a result of my earlier tom-foolery. Along the "C" trail we stop at a few famous-writer-seats and take in the view. Most of the clan explores the wolf-dens, but everyone comes back alive.

The rest of the trail was a bit of a slog, but we made quick work of it, emerging by the local drinking water supply, which has a mirror finish to it today. We arrive back at the car no worse for wear.

Four of us continue on to Jaffrey, and after being denied two times, we finally found some beer and pizza. The sign on the place reads "Share a pizza with someone you love." I think I will end the TR with that.

cheers.

Embarrassing introductions? I thought the "Hi your fly is down" was very nice!

We went down Smith Summit (marked w/ nwhite dots) to get to Ampitheater.

I had a very good, no GREAT TIME hiking with everyone Saturday. Nice pics by the way.

Indeed it was nice meeting everyone! What a beautiful day.

Okay maybe the manners need to be brushed-up, but I would want to know if my fly was down!

CT Guys - thanks for sharing the butt-warming pad and HOT chocolate!

did you guys take the cascade link all the way to the pumpelly?

That's right - Cascade Link all the way (except for Percious and Hamp whacking up a rocky section near the end).

I really enjoyed the Smith Summit Tr down to the Amphitheatre Tr - lots of rocks to hop around on - and easy to follow the well-blazed trail (tho' I did manage to miss a turn or two when I was in the front  )

Was it Brian who directed us to the Wolf Cave near the Cliff Walk? Very cool spot - I wish I had done the crawl through but memories of nearly getting stuck while caving in Indiana made it too embarassing to attempt with others around. Maybe next time...

I tried telling Ralph Emerson (one of the old folks I work with) that I was at his greatXgranddad's 'seat' on Monadnock but I don't think he knew what I was talking about

Thanks to BrianW for setting this up and to Abster, Percious, Hamp, Smitty77, and Kerry13 for making this a fun group to hike with. I hope all went well for Kerry as he left us to take the white trail back to the parking lot - did you find any of your mom's pennies this trip?

It was "wolfs den" which is located between Baldrock and Noble trail just off the Cliffwalk. My 3yr old daughter could guide you through the den. She walked through it this past summer just fine while I squeezed my way through.

Washington, Franconia Ridge and Moosiliauke were all easily seen. Also the rock markings percious took are sillimantite crystals and look like "bird tracks"

I am glad we could introduce Monadnock to Abster and show her the quieter areas on this nice peak.

Nice TR Percious! I had a great time as well. It was nice to actually do a hike with some elevation gain for once. The weather was perfect and the trails were in great shape with the exception of a rare blowdown blocking the beginning of the Cascade Link. Even new blazes on the Smith connector, Lost Farm, and Parker trails.

It was great meeting all of you.
Hopefully we can make this an annual or even bi-annual "tradition"!

I too enjoyed meeting everyone. Sorry I had to cut out early but I had plans for Garfield the following morning early and needed to head north before sunset. These short days make it tough for me. As far as I know the pennies are still there or they were removed long ago. I'll continue to search each time I'm up there, but I have already figured out that I likely won't find them until after my mother has passed away. It is typically the way those types of things work out. But who really knows. Again thanks to all. I have 3-4 nice pictures of everyone. If anyone is interested PM me with your home email and I will forward them.

Thanks Brian and everyone for introducing me to a good ascent that I don't have to travel 2+ hours to reach! If this becomes an annual or bi-annual thing than I definitely suggest we do it at the same time of year when the hoards aren't out.

Catch ya on the trail! :)

Hanna,

Anytime you want to hike it give me a call. I live close enough that hardly any planning is needed. That of course I don't have any family obligations.
