What a pleasant weekend. :) Started off at the Biscuit Brook Trailhead about 4:30 Friday afternoon where I ran into JayH. We two poor slobs had to work that day! :( Loaded on our heavy packs and headed up to the Leanto. Jay quickly left me in his dust and my longtime 4-legged hiking buddy Luke decided he wanted to hike fast that evening and galloped ahead with Jay. Noticed a roll of toilet paper on the trail (read Coldfeets TR to clarify its origins :) ) Headlamp came out once I was heading up the second pitch. As I walked, my lamp got dimmer and dimmer. Another stop to dig through the pack to get my backup and I was off again. Heard noises off trail and hollered. It was Jay and Luke, doing a spontaneous bushwhack! Luke was the first to arrive at the leanto (much to the surprise  of its inhabitants) with Jay right behind. I rolled in a few minutes later. Already at the Leanto were Daxs, Coldfeet, Mcorsar, and JohnS. They were just finishing up dinner and had a nice fire going. Spent a pleasant evening telling tales and attempting to stay warm. Bedtime was dictated by the end of firewood. Climbed into bags (thankfully most of us brought winter ones) and worked on getting warm. It was a cold evening with incredibly bright moonlight. I got to try out my new –30 Backside bag (toasty…).

Everyone hung out in their bags in the morning not looking forward to that cold blast. Eventually mother nature’s call won out and we all started moving. Hermit soon joined us but quickly took off to hit Big Indian before he met us on the herd path over to Doubletop. Ajtiv had promised bagels when he came up in the morning but we couldn’t wait so we had a quick round of hot drinks and oatmeal and then Ajtiv showed up, with a HEAVY load of bagels. (THANKS AL :D ) We all threw one in our packs for lunch and headed off. Crossing Biscuit Brook was more difficult than usual at this time of year and we walked upstream a little way before we found a reasonable crossing. JayH and Ajtiv quickly busted out in front of the rest of us and Luke decided he wanted to hang out with the boys and left me in his dust. I guess he was pleased to have hiking pals who could keep up with him! As we started climbing up the hill everyone got warm and started peeling layers. Met up with Hermit, JayH, and Ajtiv where the herd path branches off and started out. The day was beautiful, sunny and not too cold. We dropped down into the col and then started the long climb up Doubletop with Luke doing most of the route-finding :). We took a straight-on approach that led to some steep climbing. The ground is extremely saturated so earth moved and feet got wet. We decided we wanted to try to find the plane wreck over there and came right up on it, just as if we knew what we were doing! The poor soul piloting that plane barely missed clearing the mountain. Seeing those wrecks is always a little sobering. Hung out on the summit for a little while, replenishing our fuel. We had originally thought we’d head over to Graham but the day was getting late and most of us wanted to get back to the leanto before dark. So we decided to go back and hit Big Indian before calling it a day. JayH and Hermit took off to try to find a military plane wreck and the rest of us started back down into the col. Only very careful placement of feet and hiking poles kept us from sliding down in the wet earth. The climb back up the shoulder of Big Indian was a pleasant hike through great terrain. Mcorsar, Luke and I got out in front of the gang and headed over to Big Indian. Overshot the short bushwhack up by a ways and wound up last on the summit. (Thanks JayH and Daxs for waiting for me!) On the way back to the leanto we collected the nights fuel while Luke took a tough spill crossing the brook and wound up with a bit of a limp. Hermit and Coldfeet headed home and the rest of us cooked up a bunch of interesting dinners and one lousy desert… Nice roaring fire with feet and boots drying off until one of us (I won’t narc the person out) melted a piece of footwear! You’d be amazed at how quick boots moved away from that fire! JayH and Ajtiv turned round and round at the fire, like they were turning on a spit, trying to stay warm. Eventually we all climbed into bags and called it a night.

This morning we were up bright and early, eating the rest of the bagels and packing up some of our gear. (Was that a chorus of "Oh what a beautiful morning" coming from the privy?) Luke was still favoring his leg so I decided more hiking wasn’t in his day. Mcorsar decided to bag another peak so he and I loaded up heavy packs to head out while Daxs, JohnS, JayH, and Ajtiv all headed up to fir. One of them will have to post part two of this trip report. Great weekend with great people…when/where’s the next one?

Terri, sorry to hear about Luke but I to felt tired at the crossing and made it 99% of the way and slipped into the water. Guess that's what happens when one's both physically and mentally tired. Never saw a plane wreck before, not a good feeling. My boots are still wet.

Hey Terri, how is Luke, the wonder dog, doing, I presume you and Matt made it out OK, I hope his leg gets a chance to rest and heal!

Al, Carol, John, and I headed to Fir on Sunday, after Terri and Matt and Luke hiked out in the morning, Terri wanting Luke to get out safely and Matt I think was headed over to do Slide from the Curtis Ormsbee trail so we split ways in the morning while the four of us left around 8:30am to head towards Fir.

We made good progress after crossing the first brook and headed straight up the ridge with views of Hemlock to our rights and a big beech bramble pretty much all the way up. A few ledges but as far as the catskills goes, not very pronounced and all easily navigatable. Getting up the big plateau of a summit known as Fir, you have to still walk a bit to hit the canister, but the woods are pretty open up there and we hit the canister in due time. It was blowing pretty good up there, so we all put on our wind jackets or fleece and enjoyed snacks and food.

Heading back, we sort of followed the height of land but wound up a bit north than the path that we took up and wound up at steeper ledges and hit some boulder fields before deciding to go more south to get back on the ridge. However, in doing so, we passed some really nice streams that trickled in and out of the boulders, probably caused by the warmth and the previous snow that has all but melted in this part of the catskills. We noted some nice little ponds (perhaps kettle ponds?) and some interested rock formations before returning to the brook and eventually the trail. We eventually got back to the leanto to collect our big packs for the ~2 mile hike out to CR47. We got out around 1:30ish and spent a bit of time chatting before leaving...

Here are pictures of the weekend, saturday's hike and the 1 group shot at the end at the Fir mtn canister.

nice report and pix terri and jay - sound likes you guys had fun - that was like a little rainier reuinion there with dax, etc.. - hope luke is doing better.

Great TRs T and J. Great meeting John and seeing all of you this weekend. It was a terrific crew we had up there and a really nice time to be in that particular Wilderness Area. That pic of Luke crashed out will be one for the ages. Quite a dog-he really did find some good lines up some of the slopes. He seemed pretty frisky on the way out-leaving the trail now and then and sniffing around a lot. Hopefully he'll be okay. We need him to lead hikes for the 3500 Club! Congrats to David, Carol and John for getting a few more in the bag! :D

Terri and I met Ranger Dell at the parking lot and assured him that we left the leanto in good shape. After T split I ate lunch in the lot and then headed over to Slide to round out my day. I went up the main trail and made the summit in about 1 and 1/4 hours. There was a one guy up there. We started chatting and he turned out to be pretty cool-British chap named Derek. I answered his questions, pointed out some peaks and showed him the Burroughs plaque. He then joined me on the Curtis-Ormsbee to make a loop on the descent. Turns out he's climbed some in the UK and the Alps so he told me about all that and I filled him in on our Northeast US stuff. He's been in the States a year and lives w/ his wife down on Long Island. This was his first Catskill hike. I gave him my e-mail so he could potentially be joining us on hikes in the future. Interestingly, he's used crampons quite a bit, but never snowshoes, due to the type of stuff he climbed in Europe.

Jay, the C-O is in terrific shape. No work needed at the present time.
The Phoenicia-East Branch on the other hand is it's usual washed out self. The day stayed clear and we had great views from all the lookouts. The lower of the two ledges on the C-O was especially cool since I could look over at Doubletop. That really is a great little trail-one of the best in the Catskills, no question.

OH what a beautiful morning......

Actually what a great weekend! A bit chilly with some snow on the ground for the Doubletop hike but I blue skies and sun prevailed the entire weekend. We encountered no snow whatsoever on the Fir bushwack. The beech however provided nough of an obstacle on this hike. The weather was only outdone by the great people I was hiking with. Then, of course, some awesome Catskill bushwacking. The more I bushwack the less I want to hike on a trail. When do we get to go again!!!???

Thanks for the TR and pics Terri and Jay
Terri how is Luke doing? I hope he is being spoiled rotten.
I must say what a well behaved and gentle dog I loved hiking with him hope recovers soon
I had a great time thanks to; great people, great hikes, and great weather in taht order.
Not much else to be said except thanks for eating the bagels I only had to carry 3 back home.
Keep me posted on the next adventure
Al

Luke thanks you for all the concern. He wants you to know that he ate a BIG bowl of good stuff when he got home and has been crashed out on his 6 inch thick bed ever since. The limp is still noticeable but better. He also wants to know when the next hike is...and how many biscuits will he get paid for leading a Catskill 3500 hike? :)

A few thoughts on a terrific weekend:

I’m happy to hear that Luke is feeling better, Terri. He’s quite the celebrity – works a crowd like an expert, even knows how to make an entrance! I’m really glad you brought him. It made a fun weekend even better. Good to see you again.

It was a fine time with old and new friends. It’s really great to hike and camp in new places with fun people and warm campfires. Next time I'll bring a better saw.

A very comfortable privy with sun and moonrise views – what more could nature lovers desire in the woods?

Returning from Fir to the lean-to on Sunday, that down-look to the junction of Biscuit Brook with the stream coming down from Fir was just beautiful - one of those noisy, full-of-life spots in the woods that only eyeballs and ears can capture.

I had a lot fun this weekend learned that there's lots more good stuff in the Catskills. Hope to see all of you again there soon.

Matt and JayH together......uggghhhhh no thanks! :p

All the cool people were doing the Halcott, Vly and Bearpen traverse on Saturday.

Hey Spongebob, we saw your sickly sticker on Fir, I got out my white out and erased your entry. Although we still left the "Nancy is cool" there because that is true.

BTW, I've improved your avatar, please feel free to replace:

Sounds like all of you really enjoyed your outing. From an outsiders standpoint, the list might better read ...great dog, great people, great... :)

After all, I'm thinking, any dog would be wild to be out on a hike called BISCUIT Brook!!! I hope he found pleanty of treasures along the way. And then, to be in the CATSkill Mtns...

I might have to add some Catskill outings to the list. You guys make it sound most inviting!

Good observation Bubba, I never connected the Biscuit into a good dog hike destination. Although with Al's NYC bagels, it could of easily been Bagel Brook... :D

Just wanted to say thx again and that I had a great time with the group and according to the Dr. I should try avoiding going down the hill next time  ...any suggestions on how that could be done? I did try butt sliding but I noticed the look on TMax's face when some rocks and soil were landing to close to her  I knew it was a bad idea, sorry rookie mistake. Will rest for a few weeks and limit the milage next time.
