A young lady from Sequoia National forest and her girlfriend will be visiting her family friends in the Boston area and able to go camping around Oct 12th-16th. She wants to do some backpacking here in the NE while visiting but needs help.

As a Ranger in Sequoia National park, she is especially excited about seeing our famous fall colors and is looking forward to some backpacking either in the NH Whites, ADKs, Catskills or Vermont since she has never hiked here before but heard so much about us. She is not familiar with any of these areas and feels totally overwhelmed with maps and guides so she is looking for an easier way out like to do this maybe with someone that has some experience in the area.

Is anyone or a group of you guys and gals planning any trips during this time and willing to show off some of the best we have to offer here in the Northeast?

OR Perhaps... would anyone have the ranger's phone numbers for the Cats or the ADKs she can contact for help?

The fall colours...

may well be gone by mid-Oct.

It would help to know what she is expecting from her trip? A backpack?, peak bagging?, base camp and then hit the heights?, how much isolation?.

Your friend is not going to miss the color (unless Ivan or Jeanne blow it all off between now and then.) She may in fact be here right at (or just after) the so-called "peak" in central to southern parts of NH. And the northern part will still have leaves in many locations. Maybe some Vermonters here at VFTT can chime in also??

As a Midwestern native who has also lived on the West Coast and in AK, I can assure you that she hasn't seen color like New England has anywhere else.

Here's the State of New Hampshire Foliage site for more info.

My friend is not looking for advice or where to camp or a particular style of camping. Any Backpacking trip is fine, with views and seclusion are all bonus points.

What she really needs is someone to go with that is familiar with the areas they are to go to. I won't be available so I am asking here to see if we can find anyone in ADK Cats NH or vermont is headed on a fall colors trip willing to take a couple very nice visitors from the West. She is a Ranger in Sequoia National Park and knows her way around the woods and is a monster hiker/backpacker too. Good company as well.

I would say there is more chance for some color in the Catskills at that time than there is further north.

I hiked the Escarpment Trail (Catskills) last October, 18th. The color were past their peak at the higher elevations, but the views of the foiliage at the lower elevation were great. I especially remember the views from Acra Point.

The Catskills is in wonderfull color that time of year. I alwasy take a 2 nighter around Columbus weekend too.

It seems there has been a change of plans for these young ladies. They will be very busy with family during their visit and may not have time to do any backpacking. They have opted for local day hikes where they will be staying in Boston.

Thanks for all your help and offers... I do apreciate.
