I do not often post here, but want to share this with my many friends who "live" here:

On Saturday I was in front as we were doing Rocky Peak and Giant from Rt 9 (trail #112). About 30 minutes from the start I was attacked by a swarm of stinging insects. As I ran away I noticed that they were coming from a hole right in the middle of the trail. Later that day we spoke to another group of hikers, they had also been attacked. There is a brief warning in a NY Trail Conditions report.

Not too sure what you can do with this warning, other than hang around the back of the group if you are doing it as a group :)

Spectacular views on this hike, and on a Friday hike over Algonquin, Iroquois and (painfully at the end of a long day) Wright.

Or you could dress as shown in your avatar.

I've been the recipient of 5 or 6 stinging swarms over the years, and of course I aggravated them more by screaming and flapping. However, these little devils go in straight for the kill - no defense does any good.

Did you ignore the outer sentry?

I've noticed with ground nests that as you approach, there is a first sentry who buzzes you and as you get closer, a second. Then, four or five, then 10 or more, then the swarm.
This is also true of blossoming trees in spring.
The first bee is a warning, but we often swipe at it and kill it.
