Since moving up here I’ve had a lot of fun cycling new routes, and rehiking favorite peaks (Garfield, Lafayette & Lincoln), but I’ve had no motivation to continue “the list.” If anyone has any suggestions of how to get remotivated to complete the list, plmk. I’m stuck at 40.
What I did do this weekend that was a LOT of fun, was explore trails and peaks I hadn’t done before that don’t even reach 4K in elevation. Yesterday I had the extreme pleasure of hiking up the Webster Cliff trail to Mt. Webster. The day was sunny, cool, and windy with a dusting on snow in places at the top. The views off the cliffs overlooking Crawford Notch were amazing! Yellow, gold, and brown leaves past peak littered the mountains. Tom, Field, and Willey never looked so good! What a great trail!
Today I visited Avalon, a peak I passed by a year ago this past Sept. when I hiked Tom-Field-Willey. I knew then that I’d be back, and today was the day. Again it was cool, and partly cloudy, but the wind was significantly less, so it actually felt warmer. I love the trail to Mt. Avalon! It’s so pretty and gives a good workout in a short 4 mile round trip. I met three nice women hiking together, as well as a dad with his 5 year-old son who hiked a good pace. That 5 year old had so much energy and enthusiasm I have no doubt he’ll finish his 48 before I finish mine!
At the summit it was snowing! The flakes were drifting down gently as if they had lost their way without the wind. The view across Crawford Notch was wonderful! The presidentials were dressed in white and I could see Mt. Webster where I was yesterday. Mt. Willard, below Avalon, at the base of the Tom-Field-Willey ridge, looks like a nice little trail for snowshoeing this winter. When I came down off the trail, the Conway Scenic Railway train was waiting at the depot as the tourists took pictures. Two nice hikes close to home and more fun than chasing a list.
