In my book there is a bridge right behind the cabin at the gate. when I got to the signin there is a road going that way but no sign. The caretaker was not in yet so i did not go down it becouse I did not want to tick off the members and get everyone else in trouble. when i went down the road aways and crossed over to the west river trail I came back to that bridge at the start to the white trail. There was no sign on the bridge saying private. Does anyone know where this bridge comes out and if it is private property or not. This would cut off 3/4 of a mile from your hike and if you are doing the range trail this would be beneficial to your legs and your time.
On other thing, i have benn snubbed before on this road as has everyone else. But coming down the road on the way to my car I passed about 40 people in groups of 5-10. I said hello to everyone of them and only about 2 even acknowledged my existance. One sounded like niles crane all snotty like. This was my first "group snub"

Dib,

Straight ahead, ( west ) at that bridge leads to Snow mt and beyond to Rooster Comb. You can also ascend Lower Wolf Jaw in that direction. To the left,
( south) you access the West River trail and all the feeder trails to the peaks. There were signs there awhile back pointing to Snow and Rooster Comb. That trail is still open as far as I know.

sorry to confuse. I did the trail yesterday and did see the trails to snow and roostercomb. My question is does the trail "to" that bridge come out next to the trailhead sign in. If you could take a right at the gate house you could cut some timeoff your trip.

At the gate house turn right on what looks like a road. That leads .16 mi to the river and bridge. When you cross the bridge you are at the jct for Snow and the begining of the West River Trail. Yes it is "legal" to use that road behind the gate house. There use to be a green and white sign near the gate house pointing that way to identify the White Trail. not sure if it is still there. It is described in the ADK's guide to the High Peaks, here is how it is written up

" The start is on the Lake road at the small watchman's hut. Leaving the road 0 mi the trail starts down a private driveway and descends slightly to the Ausable river which it crosses on a bridge to reach a jct with the West River Trail at .16 mi. The West river Trail bears left while the WA White trail continues along an old lumber road straight ahead."

Hope this clears things up.

Sorry to hear abou your "snubbing". I've walked the road a number of times and always was treated very kindly. Everyone was very friendly all the way from the parking lot to the lakes. I'd say keep giving cheerful hi's and big smiles. :) Maybe you ran into a few people just having a hot miserable day.
