It was cold yesterday morning which was a good thing given the state of the trail from the research center. Trailhead to the 1st junction--trail was mostly wet leaves over loose rocks. Junction to Rd (including path to Esther)--ice, snow (2-4"), copious frozen mud, some deep standing water. Rd to Summit--up to 5" some over ice. Amazing views of snow above gorgeous foliage. Snow capped peak of Camel's Hump clearly visible. If we have rain or warmer weather I would avoid this trail. I was able to stay on top of the mud given the temperature, but any melt will make this hike very unpleasant. Traction (microspikes) for the upper 2/3's very helpful. Winter up high, at least for now.
