I took the Connery Pond/Whiteface Landing approach. I liked this way. I have taken the Wilmington trail up to Esther, but not beyond, but I have to say I like the Connery Pond/Whiteface Landing approach much better. The trail was dry, and it may have rained slightly the night before. It had to be the first time I hiked in the Daks where I had no mud on my pants after hiking. None! There were a few muddy sections that were easily avoided, and maybe one section of slick rock. It took me 3 hours to get up, and 3 hours down. It was cloudy, so there were no views at the top. I did get to see Lake Placid from a spot where you come out of the trees. Only three other people on the trail. Summit had people who drove up, and maybe a hiker or two from the other direction. You could see fall foliage just starting.
