Wildcat A via Nineteen Mile Brook and Wildcat Ridge Trails...
Date of Hike: Wednesday, January 21, 2009
Trail Conditions: Nineteen Mile Brook Trail is beautifully packed out since the new snow from Sunday. Snow bridges are, for the most part, intact but a few were beginning to erode late in the day.
Wildcat Ridge Trail was another story: one to two feet of new slippery powder from Sunday had been tread by only a lone hiker that appeared to be barebooting. Underneath this new snow, though, the trail appears to have been broken out in the past week or so.
The Ridge Trail is now broken out again all the way to the summit of Wildcat A by two people in snowshoes -- but could stand some additional consolidation.
Special Equipment Required: Nineteen Mile Brook Trail is bare-bootable, although my hiking partner postholed mildlly a couple of times in Microspikes. Ridge Trail -- flotation recommended.
Comments: Excellent day in Carter Notch. Great views with blue skies. Chilly, but sunny. We arrived at the trailhead later than expected (10:30) and found the entire lot completely full (15 cars) but for one final space for us -- and we expected to see a dozen people on the trail.
However, other than a solo hiker gearing up in the lot, we saw absolutely no one on the trails. Everyone else must have gone to the hut or up the Carters.
