Wildcat A via Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, Wildcat Ridge Trail
Date of Hike: Sunday, November 30, 2008
Trail Conditions: Packed powder, wet trail, ice
Special Equipment Required: MSRs and ice axe to get up Wildcat Ridge Trail
Comments:
3-6" deep, packed powder with occasional patches of ice and wet trail, up to first junction. From there to Wildcat Ridge Trail junction, 6-12" deep, packed powder with occasional patches of ice and wet trail. At this point, snowshoes would be hard to use due to the bare spots. I was able to bareboot up and back without any traction.
Wildcat Ridge Trail looked like it hadn't been used (other than a rabbit) in sometime, as a result, footbed isn't well defined - regular snowshoes would probably slide downhill off the trail a lot. Snow depths ranged from 12-24," but a crust held me up for a decent chunk of the way (where I broke through is now decently packed). Slide was doable, but went very slowly with ice axe planted, as the footbed of the trail is nowhere to be seen.
It also looks like no one has been to Wildcat A via the ridge in sometime either.
Removed a bunch of blowdowns on Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, but a *very* dangerous widowmaker remains hanging over the trail (and a herdpath 'around' it), about 1/2 mile from the parking lot - may drop at any time.
