Liz and I decided to tackle the wildcats using the Polecat trails. The climb up the ski slopes was hot and buggy. The views of the presidents from this trail system is outstanding. Made the summit in just over an hour. The ridge trail has some rough footing on the steep sections and there are many mud pits that slow your progress. Met a couple of thru hickers from Georgia headed home. I asked them how they liked Baxter and they responded rough terrain and worse weather. The hike over to A peak was uneventful. The views are somewhat limited until you reach the outlook near the summit. Then it kind of takes your breath away. Great view over to Carter Dome. We quickly found the little summit cone and headed back. The worst part of the day was the ride home on Rt. 16. Took us 4 hrs to get home. Does anybody else hate rt. 16 as much as me?
