I hiked Kearsarge from Winslow SP on Dec 8th. The road to the parking area from the junction of the town road (I think the town road is called Old Winslow Rd) was not plowed but passable at that time. Since than there has been quite a bit of snow and it's likely you'll have to walk the mile +/- up to the trail head.
Happy Hiking, Don L

Kearsarge is a nice winter hike, and the unplowed mile or so of the road goes through a nice forest, and then into the clear at the park, with great views before the trail takes you into the spruce forest. Walking the road in winter usually takes me 20-30 minutes, depending on whether snowmobiles have packed it.

thanks all for the replies.

I might still do it sometime, it's just that it turns a 2mile, 1100' hike into a 4mile 1900' hike (the el. gain is more of an issue for me this time of year than the length); at that point I might as well try to hike Mt Crawford or Mt Pierce which are only slightly more difficult but don't have a cell phone tower ( ) on top...

ill go up that after work with you if you want. is that mile of road really 800 more vertical? that would be a pretty steep road. cant be that much. good workout regardless

So, after taking my last final exam for the semester today, I find myself with very little to do at night. I'm used to staying up all night working on school work or procrastinating. Anyway, to the point, I decided to occupy myself by driving up to Winslow State Park to try out my new GPS and watch the sunset.

I measured the elevation at the end of the plowed section of road at 1446 feet. The gatehouse for the park was at 1707 feet, and the parking lot itself came in at 1831 feet. This gives a total elevation gain from the last plowed point on the road to the parking lot of 385 feet. The walking distance was 0.9 miles and took about 15-20 minutes.

The road is not very steep at all and one would be hard pressed to even get up much speed on it with a sled.
