At the Woodland Valley WS trailhead, I met up with a group hike led by Jerry from Long Island. Also from Long Island there was Kevin, and Yoshika. From Kingston, Kim.
From Shokan, Ted. From Orange County Rich and son Chris. The group was doing Wittenberg > Cornell > Slide traverse. I was just going to Wittenberg > Cornell and back.
There was about 3" of fresh fallen snow from the Thursday snow storm at the PA. Trail conditions were good with minimal ice until about 3000'. At that point the snow had increased to 12'+. Most of us had put on snowshoes at this point. Some of the ice pitches short of the peak had probably been easier with crampons.
We all summited Wittenberg and had a snack while admiring the awsome views. Quite cold and constant winds had prompted us to keep moving. A few of us had decided to switch to crampons at this point for the trip to Cornell.
Crampons were well in order to climb two of the steep ice flows on the way to Cornell. The ice axe was helpfull to some also. We had all made it to the summit and checked out the views from both sides of the peak.
At this time I said my goodbyes to the group who were heading on to Slide, and I started back to Wittenberg and back down to Woodland Valley.
All in all it was a very nice day to hike in the fresh fallen snow, and with some new faces. I enjoyed hiking with all of you and hope you all had a safe trip to Slide and home.
