Road was iced on the way in. Went up Wedge brook--leaves, mud, then crusty snow. The trail up LW was muddy and wet to the junction then packed snow. Microspikes worked fine up and down until the first rock section of UW which was a solid sheet of ice. I switched to crampons and kept them on until the Armstrong/Gothic col. The flatter sections were mostly just snow, but there were a large number of areas with difficult ice. In fact, I was balanced on the front points more than once. All the ladders are clear (but that first step off....). Trail to Gothics was packed snow. Descended via Beaver Meadows. This trail will need snowshoes up high soon, but microspikes were ok today. Snow lessened until maybe 1/4 mile from the falls. Then leaves and mud. Road had turned to thin ice and mud as I walked out with the declining sun. Nice day.
