I wanted to climb Washington or Carrigain but it was real cloudy going thru the mountains on my way up, so I changed plans and headed out around noon sunday to Zealand. BEAUTIFUL day. Reports from the hutpeople said it poured out cats and dogs earlier because the trails were soaked. I always get a kick out of looking at the journals at the hut and seeing my entries from when I was there in 1984 in winter and summer during semester breaks. Headed up to Zeacliff and had some nice chats with thru hikers. Gorgeous views as usual. The clouds were lifting and only a small one covering George's summit at that point. I figured I'd scout out the route to Zealand summit for my trip to bag it this winter. I reached the point I hit last winter when I decided to turn around. From there it had to be at least a mile and probably more to the summit of Zealand. I think its 3.1 from Zeacliff to the summit, surprising how long that ridge is. I wasn't tired yet and wanted a view, so I headed down(not very far at all) to the col and thence up to Guyot. What a place. Hadn't been there since 2001 summer with Ken Holmes. I stood around reflecting on things for awhile and looking at South Twin and neighboring peaks. I love those huge slides you can see coming off the sides of the Guyot-South Twin ridge. I considered going to Bonds but it was late afternoon and I decided to head back. I will definitely have to do some more trips out that way this summer. Was like a swamp up on the ridge in places. I shouted over to Owl's head for Sherpa John and crew but didn't hear any yelling back. I got back to the hut, then had a pleasant walk back to my car. I saw a snowshoe rabbit and startled a large deer. Always nice to see some wildlife. Quite a few people out enjoying the nice day. Got back to the car around 7:45. I will have to learn the shuttle schedule because coming back from Guyot couldn't have been much longer than continueing over Bonds and out to Lincoln Woods? I'll have to check it out. I need to buy a cheap digital camera too to start putting some pics of these trips up.
