Continuing in my quest to do some of the less glamorous peaks this winter, I decided to hike Zealand Mt. friday, stay at the hut that nite and tag Hale on the way out sat. I left 302 at 7 AM and hiked solo up the Zealand Road on the long slog up to ZeaCliff. Crampons were needed shortly after the beaver ponds. I left them on the rest of the day although they were only essential in the few steep sections. Although Zealand will probably go down as my least favorite summit (absolutely no vftt,) doing it as a solo winter climb added a little drama to an otherwise easy, but long hike. As it was, I did the +/- 12 miles from the road and back to the hut without seeing another soul. This was a good thing for me as it really added to the wilderness experience.
On sat. I started up the unbroken Lend-a-Hand trail. Some type of traction was needed and with the new powder (maybe 4") obscuring the trail I wore snowshoes. I was a little concerned about route finding but this trail is well marked and relatively easy to follow. Along with my faithfull gps/compass I was also fortunate to be able to follow mr. red fox's (small coyote?) fresh trail all the way from the hut to the summit of Hale. For the most part, he stayed right on the trail the whole time.

Glad you had a good hike!

Hey Stu,

Glad to hear you had a great solo hike on Friday and Saturday. Friday's weather must have been spectacular. I've only been in the area in the Summer & Fall. It must be alot different in the Winter.

On a Mt Adams hike up Airline/Durand Ridge back on Feb 4th, we also followed a fox tracks up the trail. We never met up with the little guy though. It's really good to see those tracks.

Friends and I tried Howker Ridge on yesterday, 3/18/2006, with Mt Madison in mind. We didn't make the summit, stopping 3 miles in, but made the best of the day. It was a good day to be in the mountains, regardless.

All the Best,

LTH

The Lend-a-Hand trail is actually quite a nice hike, passing through some beautiful birch glades. I reached the summit, had a quick lunch and started down the Hale Brook Trail before I encountered anyone. I said hello to the 1st guy and barely got a response! The hike out to the road was uneventful except where the trail slabs across the side of the slope. Definitely need to be careful in that section.
All in all, a nice 2 day hike with bit of solitude thrown in. My plan to use the hut as a base to tag these two 4000'er's worked out well. Hope you all had a great winter climbing season!
See you on the trails! STU ;)

Yea the weather was pretty nice, especially friday. In and out of the clouds all day. The sun would be out one minute, then a snow squall would come in. I must have adjusted my hat and gloves a couple dozen times.
cheers...stu
