Another Winter peak hike with Bob & Geri and my friend Mike. The goal was for Eisenhower for my 46th winter peak.
Mike & I met Bob & Geri at the Highland Center, check out the pictures of the entrance! It was in the single digits for temperature, but blue skies. We drove over to Clinton Rd to start the hike, there was nice new powdery snow which added to the beauty of the hike.
We met up with other hikers going up and coming down the trail, all of them with Pierce as their goal. We were assuming we would be breaking trail over to Eisenhower.
Hiking up to Pierce was sweet, going through winter wonderland. At the summit of Pierce we met up with some others, sorry forgot names...Took some pictures, visited and off we headed towards our goal.
As we dropped down off Pierce there was a track heading towards Eisenhower, hopfully it would continue... No such luck! It stopped where they had turned around.
We layered up for the wind that was picking up and heading out breaking trail now through deep spindrifts and piles of snow in what we assumed was the Trail. With lots of Artistic insights from all of us we made pretty good headway. All of us took turns breaking trail and falling in spruce traps, Bob wins on that one! (again check out the pics) It may not of been the straightest trail but we made our own just a little off the beaten path!
The clouds were coming in pretty dark and menacing looking, we all were keeping track behind us for our barings in case of whiteouts. At the same time the clouds were beautiful and the un broken snow was beyond words for description. With four strong hikers we made it up to Eisenhower with incredible winds into us. At the summit a gust knocked me down to my knees, of course Bob had my camera ready as I struggled to get up for my Summit shot. I took a few shots and watched the cloud formations wrap around the peaks, they were moving pretty fast. It was time to get off that Mountain. It was a fast descent, as we were able to follow the trail from this direction finding a few cairns and even the trail sign! We had to dig it out, I think I had walked right by it and didn't see it....
We were moving pretty fast to get out of the wind & cold, not stopping for much until we arrived at the Pierce Junction. Everyone had decended by now and we didn't expect to see anyone on the way down. After stopping for a snack & drink we enjoyed once again the marvels of winter wonderland on our trail down. We did run into a girl with her dog and then a couple more people just doing shorter hikes up the trail.
It was my 46th Winter Peak and Thanks to Mike, Bob & Geri for a well earned winter peak! We had lots of fun and enjoyed the beauty of the day.
If anyone is heading to Eisenhower, you may not want to follow all of our meanderings....but we were pretty close. On our track out we were able to follow the trail for just about the whole way but with those winds our tracks are gone by now, anyways......
2 more to go!!!!!! Yeah
