The “Lady” I’m referencing in the above title is the Great Gulf, and I felt that my trek into the Great Gulf today was truly an engulfment, not just a play on words.

For quite awhile I’ve resisted the beckoning of the “Lady”. On previous hikes, I’ve admired her by gazing down into her depths from vantage points along the Gulfside Trail, such as shown below. And early last autumn, I was awed by her beauty when peering into her depths from a viewpoint just off the Osgood Cut-Off trail (photo below). So today, I finally answered her call and took the journey deep into the interior of the Great Gulf, using the Great Gulf Trail as my pathway.

I found today’s hike INTO a place was just as rewarding as a trek UP TO a high-peak. But unlike a high-peak hike, where the experience can be shared via photos of sweeping vistas, the journey into the Great Gulf has more to do with the “feel” and ambiance of a true wilderness experience, i.e. things that cannot be adequately captured in a photo. I’m talking about such things as the enchanting sounds coming from the West Branch of the Peabody River as you stroll along it for nearly the entire journey. Sometimes it’s a roar; other times just a soft murmur.

And so, I think this is a journey you need to experience for yourself. It’s almost a futile effort to attempt to share this wilderness experience via photos. But nonetheless, below are a couple of pics that show just a small sampling of the countless picturesque cascades all along this trail. Also shown below is a snapshot taken from the shoreline of Spaulding Lake. But once again, this photo doesn’t do justice.

After traversing the entire length of the floor of the Gulf, I took a brief side-trip part way up the Great Gulf’s headwall to gain an overview of the area that I had just traversed, and I was rewarded with a view shown below.

The Bottom Line to All This: I’m not sure why I waited so long to have the “Lady” engulf me! Possibly, I might have shied away because of the mileage involved. But even though the round-trip from the Rt. 16 trailhead to Spaulding Lake alone is 13 miles, there’s very little climbing involved and I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly it can be hiked. My total round-trip time was just over 8 hours, but at least 1.5 hours of that time was spent eating lunch, taking photos, chatting with hikers along the way, etc.

So, if you’ve never done this hike (or not done it in awhile) give-in to the “Lady” and let her engulf you!

Great Gulf has always been my favorite hike in the WMNF, it has a special place for me and always will. It was the area of my first trailworking assignment when I was a teenager in school. There was a period of time when I was older that I wasn't able to return to it for about 8 years. So much had changed (the bootleg campsite at the lake was less discernible) but so much had not changed. And that headwall, geezum crow, what a blast. It was the ascent route for my wife the first time she did the Big W and I fear its jaded her to other approaches. Great pics on a beautiful day. Thanks for personifying "her" though, I'm not sure she is a "she" but at times it certainly has that feeling.

Nah

The Great Gulf sucks. I would stay out of there if I were you. No views, just a horrible place. No reason for anyone to go in there... ;)

Hiking horizontally

Wow, John! Great TR and pictures even if they don't convey all the wonder and beauty that you experienced first-hand. I'm so glad that you enjoyed hiking horizontally as much as you and Zman have enjoyed hiking vertically (or would that be diagonally? ;) ). Ok, thanks to you, the Great Gulf is now on my to-do list. Geez, and here I was all set to leave....

Would agree that this trek is probably not everyone’s “cup of tea”, and for those who are pretty much focused purely on summit-views, then this hike is probably NOT for you.

Hmmm! There have been a few occasions when we’ve become temporarily “directionally-challenged”, and then some diagonal-hiking has come into play!! ;)

can't reisist!!

Ok, since I'm now part of this thread I'll put my 2 cents in- we have also hiked down, in futile attempts to gain views up when the horizontal, up and diagonal visibility was zero-
lesson learned: when it's zero it doesn't matter which way you go-

Very nice! I'm so envious of anyone that could get today off to go hiking! What a gorgeous day for it! My boss was somewhere in the Whites today...he didn't say where, mostly because he wasn't sure where his partner wanted to go, or was that he didn't want me to know??? ;)

Thanks for the fine report and photos of this classic glacially carved U-shaped valley! Six Husbands Trail up Mount Jefferson is another trail in Great Gulf that I highly recommend. The abandoned Adams Slide Trail is still high on my To Do list.

Oh, that is beautiful! When I saw the first photo I thought Autumn was in the Gulf already! (Well, it seems to have hit Bethlehem already, so why not??) ;)

I'ts been a while since I did a more 'horizontal' hike... I think it was last year on the Ethan Pond/Thoreau Falls trails. This will definitely be one I'll be checking out this fall! Thanks for the great report!

That was mine and my son's first ever hike in the Whites three years ago - Rt 16 up Six Husbands to Jeff, then Adams and Madison and down Osgood on a crystal clear day. Still a great memory. Highly recommended but it is a big day loop.
