Hikin' the scree on Shasta....
Hey all - I keep hearing rumours that the base road will be plowed this year. Is this for sure true? Good news if it is as it also opens more possibilites for Clay and Jefferson. Also - I only have experiecne with washington in the winter from pinkham - anyone know about any potential avalnce hazards on the jewel or ammounsouc.

Ammonusuc Avalanche

I've climbed the ravine in February when there was quite allot of snow and also in April when there was a little snow. Most of the avalanche danger is on the eastern facing slopes, it could happen in Ammo but it's not as common.
You can check with http://www.tuckerman.org/avalanche/index.html or call the snow ranger at (603) 466-2856 to check on the conditions at the time you go.

I hiked down Jewell a few months ago and cannot imagine that there could be any avalanche danger on that trail, it runs near the top of a ridge and doesn't have any steep sections.
